Aquaculture Information Bureau

The Aquaculture industry is developing and expanding in almost all regions of the world, except in sub-Saharan Africa.

As global demand for aquatic food products increases, the production from capture fisheries has levelled off as most main fishing areas reach their maximum potential. Sustaining fish supplies from capture fisheries will, therefore, not be able to meet the growing global demand for aquatic foods.

Aquaculture appears to have the potential to make a significant world contribution to this increasing demand for aquatic foods; however, in order to realise this potential, the industry faces significant challenges.
